Orchha Introduction :

 
Orchha, 18 km of southeast of Jhansi, the former capitral of the Bundela dynasty has become an essential halt for the tourist trafiic bound for Khajuraho. The Town Orchha is famous for its palaces and temples built in 16th century. The architectural splendor of the monuments in Orchha reflects the glory of their rulers. Orchha is located in northern part of Madhya Pradesh. Market stalls, sleepy village of neatly painted house, and attractive hotels makes this place an excellent spot of northern cities.
 
 
Orchha History :
 
The name of Orchha's founding dynasty, the Bundela's derives from an 11th century ancestor who sacrificed five  heads to the mountain goddess Vindhyabatha. Vindhyela and his descendants roamed central India untill finally settling at Garkhundar, the first capital of Bundelkhand. The old outpost at Orchha, astride an island formed by a sharp bend in the river Betwa proved an ideal platform from which to dominate the region when the Tuqluq's power eventually declined. In 1531 Raja Rudra Pratap first started on work palaces and on temples. After being defeated in battle by Akbar the proud and pious Madhukar shah nearly signed his clan's death. Luckily for the bundela's however Madhukar's bold gesture earned akbar's respect, and the two became friends. In 1601, the Raja Bir Singh Deo Orchha's most illusion raja much loathed adversary, Abdul Fazal and sent Salim the decapitated head on a platter. In 1605, Bir Singh Deo was rewarded for his brutal act by helping him to seize the bundela throne from his elder brother Ram Shah. During his rule Bir Singh Deo erected a total of 52 forts and palace including the citadel at Jhansi. In 1627 he was killed by bandits while returning from the Deccan with a camel train full of booty. In 1783, the Bundela rulers shifted their capital to Tikamgarh

Rail : Nearest railhead is at Jhansi, 18 km away from Orchha. All the major and express lines stop at Jhansi.
 
Road : Regular bus service connect Orchha to Jhansi. Travelers can take bus, tempo from Jhansi to Orchha.
 
Best Season to visit Orchha :
The climate of Orchha is temperate. Summers are not too hot while winters are cool and pleasant in the month of November to February.
