The people of
Nagpur celebrate the Ram Navmi festival commemorating the birthday of Lord
Ram in April/May every year by taking out colourful processions through the
city.
The annual festival of Janmashtami commemorating the birthday of Lord
Krishna is celebrated with great pomp in Nagpur in August/September every
year. The most attractive feature of this festival is the enactment of
stealing curd from an earthen pot, which is strung high above the streets.
Groups of young men dance in the streets, where the clay pot is strung. Each
group is then given a chance (one after the other) to form a human pyramid,
so that the team leader can reach the pot and fetch it for his team. Each
group tries its best to achieve the task and the winners walk away with the
pot.
People of Marathi origin celebrate the annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival all
over India, and the city of Nagpur is no exception. This festival is
celebrated in August/September on a grand scale in Nagpur. Ganesh Chaturthi
revolves around offering of prayers and ceremoniously placing the idol of
Lord Ganesh. |
