Mumbai was renowned for its spirit of religious
tolerance and their people. British made the city
particularly attractive to minority groups persecuted elsewhere and over
the years Mumbai developed a reputation as a casmopolitan city where
Hindu, Muslim, Parsi, Jain, Budhist Christian and Jew mingled peacefully
and worshipped side by side.
Mumbai is a melting pot of many regional Indian cultures. Its residents
come from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds. Evidence of wealth is
easy to come by and there's a swaggering confidence to the way the city
conducts its business. As the film capital of India, Mumbaikars are also
generally seduced by the celebrity lifestyle.
The largest community in Mumbai is the Hindu community, accounting for
approximately 75% of the population. Around 15% of the population
is Muslim and 4% is Christian. There are also communities of Jains,
Buddhists and Sikhs, around 45,000 Parsies and 3000 Jews.
