Lucknow Introduction
|
|
In the approximate centre of Uttar Pradesh, 516km east of Delhi, the state
capital LUCKNOW is best remembered for the ordeal of its British
residents during the five-month siege of 1857. Today, Lucknow's
fading nineteenth-century monuments bear the scars of the fighting, and of
the destruction wreaked by the British army when they regained control.
Lucknow is associated with its legendary hospitality, leisurely moods of
life, world-renowned cuisine and exquisite Sham-e-Avadh. |

Lucknow History
|
|
Lucknow derives its name from Lakshman, brother of
Lord Rama the hero of the Indian epic, Ramayana. In 1732, Muhammad Shah the
king of the Mughal dynasty, appointed Mohammad Amir Saadat Khan the viceroy
of the area known as Avadh, of which Lucknow was a part. The rapid growth of
Lucknow dates from 1755 when the fourth Nawab, Asaf-ud-Daula transferred the
capital of Avadh from Faizabad to Lucknow. The centre of Muslim power
shifted gradually from Delhi to Avdah from the middle of the eighteenth
century onwards, as the Moghul empire declined. The later nawabs of Avadh
are a byword in India for indolence and decadence, but under their rule the
arts flourished. Lucknow was also an important repository of Shi'a culture
and Islamic jurisprudence, with its Farangi Mahal School of law attracting
students from as far afield as China and Central Asia. Extraordinary
sandstone monuments, now engulfed by modern Lucknow, still testify to the
euphoric atmosphere of this unique culture. European inspired edifices, too,
are prominent on the skyline, often embellished with flying buttresses,
turrets, cupolas and floral patterns, but the brick and mortar with which
they were constructed means that they are not ageing as well as the earlier
stone buildings, and old Lucknow is, literally, crumbling away. |
