Hemis Monastery |
|
Hemis, 45 km southeast of Leh, the largest monastery in Ladakh built in 1630, is visited in greater numbers than any other gompa in Ladakh. Within the monastery there are to be seen a copper-gilt statue of the Lord Buddha, various stupas made of gold and silver, sacred thankas and many objects. Every year in mid-July, hundreds of foreigners join the huge crowd of locals, to watch the colourful two-day pageant. |
