Jai Vilas Palace was built in 1875 during the regin of Maharaja Jayaji
Rao Scindia. The Scindias, who still occupy a part of the palace, have opened two wings to the public. The durbar hall museum was where the maharaja
entertained important visitors, among them the Prince of Wales (later
Edward VII), who descended on Gwalior in 1875 with an entourage of a
thousand people. Displayed in the banquet hall on the ground floor is a
silver toy train used by Jayaji Rao Scindia.
