Dehradun, the hill resort in Uttaranchal state of India. Dehradun is 225 km north of Delhi.  Dehradun is situated 260 kms from Delhi and is a picturesque valley nestled between the Shivalik hills in the south and the Himalayan ranges in the north. On its flows river Ganga and river Yamuna on its west.

History
It is believed that the city of Drona is as ancient as 2500 years old. In the ancient days upto the 17th century, it was known by the name of Prithupur. The ancient name of the city is also said to be Dronashram. The name Dehradun is made up of two different words, Dehra & Dun. The word Dehra is believed to have come out from the word Dera, meaning a camp and the word Dun   indicating Guru Dronacharya of Mahabharta time, meaning thereby a settlement started by the great Guru which happens to be wonderful valley between two Mountain ranges the Himalayas & the Shivaliks.

 
How to Reach Dehradun
Air : The Jolly Grant airport, nearest from Dehradun is 25 km away. It is linked with flights to Delhi, which is major international airport of India.

Road : The excellent rail network links Dehradun with other important places of India. The Shatabdi Express, Mussorie Express and the Dehradun-Mumbai Express cater to the rail transport between Dehradun and Delhi, Mussorie, Mumbai, Varanasi, Calcutta and Lucknow.

Rail :
Dehradun is well connected to other cities of Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Delhi by regular bus services like Agra, Calcutta, Chennai, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mumbai and Delhi. There are road routes that connect Dehradun with tourist places like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Shimla, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, Nainital, Badrinath, Gaurikund, Gangotri, Kalsi and the Rajaji National Park.
