Makar Sankranti or kite
festival held on the 14th January, the, marks the end of winter and return
of the sun to northern hemisphere and is hence named "Uttar ayan". On this
particular day everybody in Ahmedabad starts the day with kite flying and
continues into the night by attaching lamps (Tukkal) to kites so one can see
them in the sky.

Modhera Dance Festival The Sun Temple at Modhera is positioned in such a
manner that the sun's first rays illuminate the deity in the innermost
sanctum through the main entrance. During January every year,
for 3 days, there is a romantic fete of classical dance against the backdrop
of this incredibly beautiful sun Temple that shouldnt be missed. |

Rath Yatra
In the months of June or July a massive procession takes place
from the Jagannath (Juggernaut) temple in Ahmedabad. Amidst the chanting of
the sacred and Vedic hymns, a sacred chariot is taken out carrying idols
Krishna, Balram and Subhadra. If in the area, this shouldnt be missed.

August or September Just 3 hours drive from Ahmedabad,
Tarnetar, a quiet hamlet is transformed into a whirl of colour & excitement
in the first week of Bhadrapad. The Tarnetar fair is one of the most
colourful events in Gujarat & is attended by various tribes of Gujarat.
During the festival match making is celebrated over 3 days and 2 nights.
Its another fun filled festival worth viewing.

This festival of Lord Krishna's birth is
celebrated every year in the auspicious month of Shravan. It
is a cause of special rejoicing in the city of Dwarka, which according to
legend, was once the capital of Lord Krishna's empire. |

Navratri
is a nine day festival dedicated to Goddess Amba and is held on the very
first days of Ashvin in September or October. Navratri is the most important
and colourful festival of Gujarat when different forms of the Mother
Goddesses are worshipped. People dance the garba and Dandiya Ras through the
night in an explosion of colour in all their traditional finery and Garba
competitions are held.
